On the morning of September 6, 2015, one of South Carolina’s talented and beloved equine veterinarians tragically passed away. John A. Malark was the owner of Edisto Equine Clinic and the only board-certified equine surgeon in the state. John cared for all of the horses in the Lowcountry and Midlands; he cared for them exceptionally well. His knowledge and understanding of the equine patient was extensive and accurate. Quality of care and dependability were a standard for John. He knew very few strangers and made everyone feel at ease and welcome.
John had a very large presence and if he had an opinion, he would tell you about it. John’s passions were his alma mater Michigan State and the Spartan athletic teams, the acoustic guitar and James Taylor. Most importantly, his greatest love was for his family. He was extremely proud of his children and loved to talk about them and his wife, Carmela, with his clients. John also cared deeply for the wellbeing of others’ children.
The South Carolina equine community mourns the loss of this kind, passionate man. They thank him for his friendship, his hard work, and for being someone that could be counted on to take care of their horses no matter the time of day or night. Thank you, John, for your jovial ways and ever-present smile. May you rest in eternal peace.
